CAN A THERMOCOUPLE GO BAD?

When you rely on something to provide accurate readings, you don’t want to consider if it will eventually fail. Thermocouples play a key role for many businesses, but can they go bad over time? In short, yes.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERMOCOUPLES GO BAD?

A bad thermocouple can lead to inaccurate measurements that could lead to bigger problems. If a thermocouple fails, it also means additional costs for a business. You’ll have to deal with costs for replacing the thermocouple, as well as dealing with the results of incorrect readings.

WHAT CAUSES THERMOCOUPLES TO GO BAD?

Finding the cause for thermocouple failure when it happens is important for saving costs and reducing downtime in the future.

When troubleshooting thermocouple failure, start by reviewing three key issues:

System wiring

Probes

Wire & Junction

Read more details in our post about Three Issues to Consider When Troubleshooting Thermocouple Failure.

Thermocouple failure may also be a result of other factors, such as metal fatigue and oxidation or failure from contamination or poor installation. Whatever the cause for the failure, it’s important for a business to determine the cause so they can prevent the issue from happening again in the future.

WHAT ARE TYPE N THERMOCOUPLES?

One of the keys to running an efficient, effective business is having all the right tools and parts you need to succeed. When it comes to thermocouples, it’s critical to know which types of temperature sensors are best suited for your applications. In this post, we’re highlighting a Type N thermocouple, a close relative of the common Type K thermocouple.

TYPE N THERMOCOUPLES

A quick way to describe a Type N thermocouple is as a Type K thermocouple with a few key differences. Both variants offer the same temperature ranges, with a recommended usage range of -454 to 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit. However, Type N thermocouples are made with nicrosil and nisil legs and are designed to improve on some issues found in Type K parts.

One of these improvements is a higher resistance to high temperature oxidation. While chromel in Type K thermocouples can be prone to developing “green rot” in vacuum or reduced oxygen environments with higher temperatures, Type N thermocouples can deliver accurate readings in these settings. Another advantage of Type N thermocouples is that they are better suited for nuclear environments, making them a popular option for people with related applications.

Because of their advantages over Type K thermocouples, Type N variants are the more expensive of the two parts. However, if the additional oxidation resistance and nuclear suitability is a need, it’s worth the investment.

GET YOUR OWN TYPE N THERMOCOUPLES

Whether you know exactly what type of thermocouples you want or are trying to figure out which products you need for your applications, it’s important to turn to a trusted industry partner.

You can build your own Type N Thermocouples with our Thermocouple Builder.
WHAT ARE TYPE J THERMOCOUPLES?

Thermocouples are designed to provide you with reliable, accurate temperature readings. However, you might not get the results you want if you don’t choose the right type of thermocouple for your application.

There are several different types of thermocouples that you can choose from, but there is no “one-type-fits-all” solution. Instead, it’s key to find out which type of thermocouple is best suited for your applications. Let’s start with one of the most common types of thermocouples available.

TYPE J THERMOCOUPLES

The Type J variant of thermocouples is a popular general purpose sensor. They are commonly used for a wide variety of applications and are known for reliability and cost effectiveness. Type J’s are one of the nickel alloy thermocouples and is made with an iron positive leg and a constantan negative leg.

Type J thermocouples are a fairly versatile option, although it does have a smaller temperature range than Type K thermocouples, another common part option. The iron leg of the Type J thermocouple oxidizes more rapidly in sulfurous atmospheres and at temperatures over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which can lead to a shorter service life at higher temperatures. The iron wire may also become fragile in freezing temperatures. However, a protection tube can be used to help keep the thermocouple clean and prolong service life, making Type J thermocouples a solid choice for general use.

GET YOUR OWN TYPE J THERMOCOUPLES

Businesses invest in Type J thermocouples for good reason; they’re affordable, reliable, and fall within the temperature range of many applications. If you’re in need of quality Type J thermocouples, GeoCorp can help. We can manufacture thermocouples based around your needs, allowing you to get the thermocouples you need to succeed.

Contact us today if you have any questions about thermocouple capabilities or design and order your own thermocouple online if you exactly what your business needs.

WHAT IS A WIRE BRAIDER AND HOW DOES IT HELP ME?

Over the years, GeoCorp has made investments in technology and equipment that allow us to manufacture quality thermocouples and other related products for our customers. There are many steps involved in manufacturing a wide variety of thermocouples, which can require different machines that provide a variety of benefits. One of the tools that can have a big impact on the quality of your thermocouple is a wire braider.

WHAT IS A WIRE BRAIDER?

A wire braiding machine does exactly what the name implies: braid wires. These machines are used to take pliable, “soft” metals and weave them together. Materials commonly include copper wire and steel braid wire, but many different materials can be used to achieve different effects, such as added insulation, flexibility, and other benefits.

Braided wire is used in several different applications. These can range from coaxial cables used to hook up televisions to sleeves for harnesses in aerospace products. Wire braiding can also be used for thermocouple supplies.

HOW DOES A WIRE BRAIDER IMPROVE MY THERMOCOUPLES?

When it comes to thermocouples, wire braiding can be used to create quality insulations for thermocouple wire. In fact, GeoCorp has used wire braiders to overbraid fiberglass, vitreous silica, and ceramic fiber insulations for thermocouple products since first investing in a braiding machine back in 1999. These braids can help protect them from a variety of factors including extreme temperatures, corrosion, and abrasion.

INVEST IN WIRE BRAIDED THERMOCOUPLES

While GeoCorp got its first wire braider back in 1999, the company now has close to 100 braiders in production. This investment is just one of many that GeoCorp has made in order to manufacture thermocouple supplies in house in order to provide customers with quality products without having to spend extra on working with a middle man.

If you need thermocouples with special braided insulations, we can help. Contact us today to learn more about our thermocouple solutions and to order your own parts today.

WHY EXTREME HEAT ENVIRONMENTS CALL FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE THERMOCOUPLE WIRE

You wouldn’t want a veterinarian performing your heart surgery. Using people or products that aren’t meant for a certain job can be risky, causing future problems that can cost you and your business. That idea applies to high temperature thermocouples.

If your temperature sensors can’t stand the heat, you’ve got a problem. While some thermocouples are designed to measure a wide range of environments, not all designs are meant to handle excessive temperatures. For that, you’ll want a solution meant for use in extreme environments.

ISSUES CAUSED BY HIGH TEMPERATURE

Using the wrong type of thermocouple for extreme heat environments can lead to several issues. Exposure to high temperatures can lead to contamination. Operating a thermocouple not designed for a certain range may end up shortening its lifespan. The wrong type of thermocouple wire can even have a melting point that’s too low for an environment, turning your sensor into an inoperable mess.

No matter what the issue is, improper thermocouples can be costly. Not only will you have to spend money on replacement parts, thermocouple failure can lead to faulty readings, leading to additional problems for your business.

BEST THERMOCOUPLE TYPES FOR HIGH TEMPERATURES

High temperature thermocouple wire is designed to not only survive the heat, but thrive in it. There are a plenty of thermocouple types available, but these are great options for high temperatures environments.

Type K

Type N

Type R

Type S

Type C

These thermocouples are built to beat the heat. They can also come with special thermocouple protection tubes and insulators that can help your sensors perform in extreme temperatures.

TROUBLESHOOTING THERMOCOUPLE FAILURE: PROBES

When a part fails, it can pay to find out why. Troubleshooting the reasons why a thermocouple fails can give you important information on why your parts are failing. In this post, we’ll consider troubleshooting issues with thermocouple probes.

POTENTIAL REASONS FOR THERMOCOUPLE PROBE FAILURE

One issue that may lead to failure is pushing the thermocouple probe too far. That could mean a couple of things.

Your probe may fail because it’s being applied in the incorrect environment. If a probe is only designed to operate in areas within a certain temperature range, temperatures higher than suggested could be the issue. There’s also the case that your probe may not be properly protected for certain environmental factors and that a different choice of insulation materials could help save your thermocouples.

Another issue may be the construction of the thermocouple itself. There’s a chance that the design of the thermocouple may not be best suited for your application. Thermocouples that are grounded, ungrounded, or have exposed tips are not all the same, so a wrong design choice could lead to future issues.

Finally, there’s always a chance that the thermocouple was improperly installed. An incorrect installation or improper handling can lead to incorrect results and even damage the thermocouple itself.

THERMOCOUPLE PROBE INSPECTION

Regardless of the reason for failure, you’ll never know the issue if you don’t inspect the parts. If your readings seem to be off, make sure that your thermocouples are set up correctly, have the proper design, or don’t show any signs of damage. Thermocouple probes can be tough, but that doesn’t mean that they’re impervious to issues. Things you might notice include:

Cracks

Pin holes

Discolored areas

If you’re in need of quality replacement thermocouples or have questions about what designs or insulations are best for your applications, make sure you talk to a thermocouple professional. Contact us today to get the answers you need from one of our experts so that your applications are set up with quality, working thermocouples.

THE COST OF THERMOCOUPLE FAILURE

Businesses work hard to make money, but broken parts or applications can make it much harder to stay in the black. Bad parts, such as a bum thermocouple, do more than just aggravate you. They can lead to costly downtime that can hurt the business’ bank account in more than one way.

RECOVERY COST

When something breaks, you still have to fix it. Unexpected issues with parts or machines can force you to shell out some money to fix the issue long before you had planned on regular maintenance and replacement. That means that you’re already down earlier than expected, plus you’ll either have to hire someone to fix the issue or assign it to someone within your company.

LOST REVENUE

While you wait for that part to be replaced or that machine to be fixed, it can’t generate any revenue. That means that you won’t be able to make money at the rate that you had planned, losing you potential money or hurting your chances of meeting important deadlines.

LOST PRODUCTIVITY

Remember that employee who you may need to fix your issue? Chances are that he or she had to stop doing something else to work on this unexpected problem. That’s lost productivity that can hurt your bottom line. Also, downed machines may mean that other employees may be unable to do their jobs until the issue is fixed. It’s hard to make money when the workers can’t work.

SAVE YOUR REPUTATION

While broken parts or machines can cost you money, there’s always a chance it can cost you your reputation as well. Faulty parts can lead to missed deadlines and angry clients. Investing in quality parts like thermocouples can keep your business running smoothly so that you don’t have to worry about the costs of downtime.

At GeoCorp, we have a reputation for manufacturing quality thermocouples that help our customers succeed. Between our in-house, accredited quality control lab and excellent customer service, we help you get the thermocouples you need without the headaches. Contact us today to talk to our experts about thermocouples for your business.

THERMOCOUPLE INSULATION OPTIONS FOR EXTREME TEMPERATURES

In order to measure extreme temperatures, thermocouples need to withstand extreme temperatures. Thermocouples are designed to be able to operate in high temperatures, but sometimes they need a little extra protection in order to deliver consistently accurate readings.

That’s where thermocouple insulators can help. Insulation accessories protect your thermocouples from extreme temperatures and thermal shock so that you won’t have to worry about inaccurate readings that can lead to errors down the road. Here are some options for businesses in need of insulators for their thermocouples.

THERMOCOUPLE INSULATOR OPTIONS

Every application can be a little different than the next. That means you might need a couple of different thermocouple insulator options to suit your specific needs. GeoCorp manufactures a variety of thermocouple insulators, each with different sizing and bore options.

Cordierite

Round or Oval Shaped

Diameters from 3/16″ to 9/16″

Lengths are 1″ or 3″ long

Double bore or Four bore

Alumina/Mullite

Diameters from 1/32″ to 1/2″

Lengths from 1″ to 72″

Single, Double, Four and Six bores available

Hafnia

Round shape

Diameters from 1/16″ to 1/8″

Single, Double and Four bores available

PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENTS WITH QUALITY THERMOCOUPLE SUPPLIES

Setbacks can be costly. Protect your thermocouples – and your investment – with thermocouple insulators that allow you to get the readings you need even in difficult applications. Contact us today to talk to our experts about insulators and other quality thermocouple products.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR HARDNESS TESTING

Testing is important. Testing a material’s hardness rating can save a company plenty of time and money down the road, so having proper hardness testing equipment is essential. Here’s what you’ll need to test your materials.

HARDNESS TEST BLOCKS

You need the right blocks to verify a material’s hardness. Test blocks give you the ability to compare hardness values against the materials that you’re testing. There are a variety of hardness testing blocks to choose from for macro and micro hardness testing, including:

Rockwell Test Blocks

Brinell Test Blocks

Knoop Test Blocks

Vickers Test Blocks

HARDNESS PENETRATORS AND INDENTERS

Once you have the right hardness test blocks, you need the right tools to test them with. Penetrators and indenters are used to create an indentation in a material. The resulting indentation can tell you about the hardness of the material. Available hardness penetrators and indenters include:

N.I.S.T. Traceable C-Scale Diamond

A-Scale Diamond

N-Scale Diamond

Versitron & Indentron Styles

HARDNESS TEST ACCESSORIES

A few extra accessories can be quite helpful. Customized anvils can help you support different types of samples for hardness testing. Also, extensions for your indenters can be used to test samples with deep internal surfaces.

HARDNESS TESTING TOOLS FROM GEOCORP

Testing for Hardness shouldn’t test your patience. High-quality hardness testing equipment from GeoCorp can benefit your business. Contact us today to talk to our experts about hardness testing equipment for your company.

THE THERMOCOUPLE 411: INDUSTRIAL THERMOCOUPLE ASSEMBLY OPTIONS

Thermocouples aren’t very useful if the thermocouple element is physically damaged due to exposure to fluids, extreme pressure, or gasses.

Of course, a thermocouple assembly – which is a combination of the thermocouple element and protection tube – is an ideal option for applications like these.

ASSEMBLY OPTIONS

Industrial assemblies give you the opportunity to mix and match different parts to come up with the best combination for you and your company. In terms of elements, there are several potential choices, with factors like calibration types and gauges coming into play.

When it comes to the protection tube, GeoCorp provides three options:

• Metal alloy protection tubes

• Ceramic protection tubes

• Specialty protection tubes

Each type of protection tube has different outside diameter options, accessories, and capabilities, allowing you to see which type suits your application best.

HOW CAN GEOCORP HELP ME?

Because we manufacture the protection tubes and the elements, you can cut out the middle man. By extension, you cut costs and simplify your ordering experience by working with just one partner.

Best of all, we keep the element materials in stock and can make protection tubes in your specific size and length in less than 24 hours.

With GeoCorp, you get a quality, customized, quality assembly. Fast.

LET’S TALK

Want to learn more? Give us a call at 419-433-1101 or contact us online today.

QUALITY PLUS OPTIONS

Aside from the quality of our elements, we know that every business has its own unique needs.

We have a seemingly endless number of options for your application:

• Calibration Types: Type K, N, J, and R/S

• Element Options: Single, duplex, or B & C

• B&S Gauge: Choose from nine options

THE THERMOCOUPLE 411: THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN M-GEO VS. L-GEO STYLE THERMOCOUPLES

Are you an M-Geo type of person, or would you rather go with an L-Geo? Unless you really know your thermocouples, you very well may not know. Both the M-Geo and the L-Geo share a lot of similarities, but there are a few major differences that may determine which style you should choose.

M-GEO BASICS

The M-Geo is a metal sheath or mineral insulated style thermocouple that are good for applications that require resistance to tough environments and still require consistent readings. The thermocouple has Single and Duplex element options, and sheath materials include:

Inconel 600

304 stainless steel

310 stainless steel

316 stainless steel

446 stainless steel

Other options available

For more M-Geo specifications, check out the product details on our site.

L-GEO BASICS

While the M-Geo is insulated by magnesium oxide, the L-Geo uses loosely-packed ceramic insulators like alumina, mullite, and hafnia to protect it from harsh environments. In addition, L-Geo also has a Triplex element option and has additional sheath materials, including:

Molybdenum

Tantalum

Alumina

Mullite

Just like the M-Geo, more product details can be found on the L-Geo page.

GET WHAT YOU NEED

Like GeoCorp’s other thermocouple options, we can help you design a model that works best for you and help guide you to whether the M-Geo, L-Geo, or another style may be the best option for your application.
Nobody wants to deal with bad service. An unpleasant experience can not only put a damper on your day, but also make you reconsider your choice of which companies to work with. With GeoCorp, you won’t have that problem.

We make sure that our sales professionals can handle your thermocouple questions, making the product purchasing process as smooth as possible thanks to our staff’s experience and personal service.

EXPERIENCE WITH THERMOCOUPLES

Personal customer support is great, but it’s not quite as helpful if the people helping you don’t truly understand your questions. All of our sales and customer service personnel follow a training matrix which includes time spent in the production facility, which means they have actually made thermocouples and are more knowledgeable as a result.

PERSONAL SERVICE

A phone call doesn’t seem too problematic until it turns into a game of phone tag. Our experienced employees will make sure to answer your calls during our business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), providing you with answers to your questions instead of being sent to someone else’s voicemail every time. That means you’ll be dealing with a person instead of waiting for a response.

ASM HEAT TREAT 2013

GeoCorp, Inc. experienced much success at the ASM Heat Treat 2013 show held in Indianapolis, IN. We spoke with people from all across the heat treat spectrum. Industries represented were aerospace, aircraft engines, commercial heat treaters, automotive, cryogenic, furnace service companies and gear manufacturers.

Attendees were spotted thru-out the show with the complimentary GeoCorp type-N system accuracy test probe provided with NIST traceable calibration per AMS 2750E. The type-N thermocouple was manufactured from GeoSpec material with temperature tolerances not exceeding +/- 2°F or 0.2% whichever is greater. The tighter temperature tolerances are essential for companies with AMS 2750E class 1 & 2 furnaces.

GeoCorp, Inc. would also like to thank ASM for their constant assistance to make our show extremely successful by working with us on sponsorships. The GEO bottled water was well received by attendees with even GEO bottles located in competitors booths.

GEOCORP FINDS GREAT SUCCESS AT TWO TRADE SHOWS IN JUNE

GeoCorp, Inc. exhibited at the PowderMet 2012 show in Nashville, TN on June 11th & 12th. The show was well attended with many people looking for better thermocouple solutions. Attendees were furnace operators, plant managers, furnace manufacturers and university members. One idea discussed between GeoCorp personnel and attendees was the proper working techniques for expendable thermocouple wire used to perform temperature uniformity surveys for furnaces.

Following the PowderMet show, GeoCorp, Inc exhibited at the AeroMat 2012 in Charlotte, NC. Suppliers of all major aircraft and aerospace manufacturers were in attendance.
