3 ISSUES TO CONSIDER WHEN TROUBLESHOOTING THERMOCOUPLE FAILURE

Sometimes the smallest issues can lead to big problems. When your business relies on crucial temperature readings from your thermocouples, it can pay to identify individual factors that may have caused part failure. Here are some examples of failures and how to troubleshoot issues.

SYSTEM WIRING

Issues with system wiring is one area that can cause thermocouple failure, with issues ranging from minor damages to faulty parts or installation. These failures can lead to anything from a quick part replacement to the discovery of potentially widespread issues.

Here are some reasons why your system wiring may be the cause of the problem.

PROBES

One issue that may lead to failure is that the thermocouple probe was pushed too far. That could mean a couple of things.

Your probe may fail because it’s being applied in the incorrect environment. If a probe is only designed to operate in areas within a certain temperature range, usage in temperatures outside that range could cause an issue. There’s also the case that your probe may not be properly protected for certain environmental factors and that a different choice of insulation materials could help save your thermocouples.

Read more about troubleshooting probe failure.

WIRE & JUNCTION

It doesn’t always take much to cause problems. Using the incorrect type of wire or the wrong junction can lead to failure. Wire and junction failure is often the result of small, overlooked issues, so it’s important to ask the right things to properly identify the problem.

Read more about what questions to ask to diagnose your wire and junction problem.

WHAT ARE TYPE T THERMOCOUPLES?

Whether you need temperature sensors for high temperature or low temperature situations, there’s a type of thermocouple that’s best suited for your application. In this post, we break down the differences between Type T thermocouples and other temperature sensor options.

TYPE T THERMOCOUPLES

Not all thermocouples are used for blazing hot environments. Type T thermocouples specialize in extremely low temperatures, making them a natural fit for food monitoring and environmental applications and a favorite for freezer and cryogenic situations.

Type T thermocouples are made with a combination of copper and constantan and are best suited for temperatures between -454 and 700 degrees Fahrenheit.

Another advantage of Type T thermocouples is that they feature high corrosion resistance that can limit errors caused by temperature gradients. These temperature sensors are used in in oxidizing atmospheres, although protection tubes are recommended for use in those environments.

Type T thermocouples also benefit from being non-magnetic, so they can be safely used in environments featuring strong magnetic fields that fall within their suggested temperature range.

Reminder: Type T Require Careful Calibration

Of course, there are usually a few drawbacks with every type of thermocouple. For Type T’s, they require careful calibration before use, as they have small output signals and can be affected by noise. Also, with their given temperature range, they are prone to damage if you push closer to 700 degrees Fahrenheit.

GET YOUR OWN TYPE T THERMOCOUPLES

Whether you need quality Type T thermocouples for you low-temperature applications or some other type of temperature sensor solution, it helps to work with a trusted thermocouple supplier.

GeoCorp is a premium thermocouple manufacturer that has built a reputation around doing whatever it takes to deliver a quality thermocouple solution for our customers. Contact us today to talk to a GeoCorp expert about your thermocouple needs, or build your own Type T Thermocouple with our Thermocouple Builder.

WHAT ARE TYPE K THERMOCOUPLES?

Every application is different, which is why thermocouple manufacturers produce a wide variety of thermocouple types to match the specific needs of each business. Different considerations, such as overall operating temperature and environment, will impact exactly which type of thermocouples you need, as some will be much more viable than others.

Of course, it’s easy to choose if you know every type of thermocouple by heart. That’s why we’re putting together a quick rundown of different thermocouple types to help you decide which one is right for your applications, including the Type K thermocouple.

TYPE K THERMOCOUPLES

Like Type J thermocouples, the Type K option is a very common general-purpose solution for a variety of applications. They are a nickel alloy thermocouple and are made with chromel and alumel. Type K thermocouples have a recommended usage range of -454 to 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit, although they’re typically used for environments and applications above 1,000 degrees.

While Type K thermocouples are very popular, there are some environments that they should be avoided. While these thermocouples generally well-suited for oxidizing atmospheres, the chromel element does not mix well with reduced oxygen environments around 1,500 to 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit. This is because chromel is subject to “green rot” in these conditions, which corrodes the non-magnetic chromel wire and even causes it to become magnetic. These thermocouples also should be avoided for long-term use in vacuums, as chromium may cause vaporization.

GET YOUR OWN TYPE K THERMOCOUPLES

Aside from a few specific environmental restrictions, Type K thermocouples are a great option for many different applications due to their reliability, versatility, and cost-effectiveness.

Whether you need quality Type K thermocouples or some other type of sensor, GeoCorp can help. Contact us today to talk to a GeoCorp expert about your thermocouple needs.

WHAT AFFECTS THE SERVICE LIFE OF A THERMOCOUPLE SENSOR?

When it comes to thermocouples, the longer the service life, the better. Unfortunately, a long, healthy service life isn’t always a reality.

There’s always a chance that a thermocouple can go bad and fail earlier than expected, causing costly downtime that can hurt your business in several ways. To limit the potential for thermocouple issues and extend part life, it’s important to understand some of the factors that affect a thermocouple’s service life.

MECHANICAL DAMAGE

Natural wear and tear or accidental damage to any of a thermocouple’s parts can lead to a shorter part life. Damage to any of a thermocouple’s elements, such as the protection tubes, sheathes, and the wire itself, can lead to mechanical wear, vibration, and other effects that’ll put an end to your thermocouple earlier than expected.

OVERHEATING

There is such a thing as too much heat for a thermocouple. Whether you accidentally use a thermocouple that isn’t meant to operate at your applications temperatures or your processed run hotter than they should, exposure to overheating can damage the elements in a thermocouple. This can wear down on your parts and result in a shorter life than normal.

HUMAN ERROR

Mistakes happen, and sometimes your thermocouples pay for those mistakes. There are a variety of ways that human error can contribute to a thermocouple’s early demise. For one, poor installation is a recipe for thermocouple failure. If a person doesn’t correctly install a part, it can create undue pressure that damages the part and significantly shortens service life.

A person may also accidentally contaminate the part. Careless handling of a thermocouple can lead to harmful chemicals and other contaminants to come in contact with your parts. This can accelerate issues like metal fatigue and oxidation, both of which spell out a shorter life span for your thermocouples.

IMPROVE THERMOCOUPLE SERVICE LIFE

When it comes to preventing thermocouple failure, a proactive approach is better than a reactive one. Regular maintenance will help you catch certain issues, allowing you to adjust your applications or thermocouples themselves before you experience a period of unexpected downtime.

Another key way to improve the service life of your thermocouples is to invest in quality parts that are designed for your applications. GeoCorp can work with you to manufacture the parts that are made for your needs and last longer as a result. Contact us today to talk to a GeoCorp expert about your thermocouple needs.

A QUICK GUIDE TO THERMOCOUPLE WIRE COLOR CODING

Using the wrong thermocouple wire can be a costly mistake. Consistent labeling is key when it comes to differentiating exactly which types of thermocouple wire you’re working with or which types you need to order. That’s why there are established color codes in place to help.

There are two governing bodies that have developed color codes that are generally accepted around the world: The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The color code you should follow depends on where you are. GeoCorp is in the U.S., so we follow ANSI color codes, while IEC standards are international.

There are plenty different types of thermocouples, so it’s good to get on the right page when it comes to color codes.

MATCHING THERMOCOUPLE TYPES TO THE COLOR CODES

Each type of thermocouple has multiple colors associated with it. Standard grade and extension grade wire have their own respective colors, while the positive and negative leads also have associated colors. Here’s a quick rundown of ANSI color specifications.

Type K

TROUBLESHOOTING THERMOCOUPLE FAILURE: SYSTEM WIRING

Sometimes the smallest issues can lead to big problems. When your business relies on crucial temperature readings from your thermocouples, it can pay to pay identify individual factors that may have cause part failure.

Issues with system wiring is one area that can cause thermocouple failure, with issues ranging from minor damages to faulty parts or installation. These failures can lead to anything from a quick part replacement to the discovery of potentially widespread issues. Here are some reasons why your system wiring may be the cause of the problem.

TROUBLESHOOTING A THERMOCOUPLE SYSTEM WIRING

Little problems could be the cause of the failure. For example, a small break in the insulation is all it takes to create a short. A quick examination of the system wiring can provide a lot of answers and simple solutions that can get your sensors running in short order.

If these smaller issues aren’t the cause of the failure, you may be dealing with connector problems that’s affecting the system wiring. Connectors may have corroded over time, especially if they were reused after the last time you changed the thermocouple.

POST-INSPECTION STEPS

Once you’ve determined the issues with your system wiring, you’ll be able to decide a plan of action. Depending on your applications and the thermocouple issues, you’ll have to decide if you can chance the occasional thermocouple failure or if you need to reevaluate the situation so that future problems won’t create costly mistakes in the future.

If you decide that you need to upgrade your thermocouples or need to find solutions to avoid pesky system wiring issues, it’s time to talk to an expert. Contact us today to get in touch with one of our professionals who can offer you quality solutions for your thermocouple problems.

TROUBLESHOOTING THERMOCOUPLE FAILURE: WIRE AND JUNCTION

Broken parts can ruin a perfectly fine day. Even worse, they can hurt your business’ bottom line by providing you inaccurate information.

Thermocouple failure can lead even the best professionals astray, so it’s critical to troubleshoot broken parts to identify what went wrong, what you need to do, and how you can avoid these problems in the future. We’ve already pointed out some troubleshooting tips for thermocouple probe failure, so now we’re highlighting what to look for when there are issues with the wire and junction of a thermocouple.

TROUBLESHOOTING A THERMOCOUPLE WIRE AND JUNCTION

It doesn’t always take much to cause problems. Various issues can lead to failure, so it’s important to ask the right things to properly identify the problem. Industrial Heating Magazine points out a few questions you should ask when troubleshooting the wire and junctions for your thermocouples.

Are you using the right type of wire for your application?

Are you using the correct junction for your application?

Did a short occur between the wires somewhere other than at the junction?

Is the junction and wire properly installed?

Is the wire broken?

Are there issues with the probe that could affect the wire and junction?

Finding the answers to these questions can help you diagnose exactly why your thermocouples went bad and help you avoid future issues.

REPLACING FAILED THERMOCOUPLES

Once you’re done troubleshooting, it’s about time to find replacement thermocouples for your applications. Contact us today if you need to talk to an expert about which thermocouples would be best for your applications and offer any advice that can help you avoid the issues that caused problems in the first place.

NOISE REDUCTION TIPS FOR THERMOCOUPLE MEASUREMENTS

When it comes to measurements, noise can be a big problem. Accuracy is hugely important and electrical noise can influence temperature measurements enough that it can be hard to make a correct interpretation of thermocouple readings. Here are four types of noise that can create problems, plus tips on how to deal with them.

STATIC ISSUES

If a voltage source is coupled capacitively in an instrumentation circuit, you may have static noise issues. You can help solve this problem by placing the circuit in a total coverage shield. This will isolate the wires from outside influences while the grounded shield intercepts any static.

MAGNETIC NOISE

When currents flow through equipment, magnetic fields will radiate around the conductor. Unfortunately, this magnetic force can pass between conductors, resulting in a current that opposes the magnetic field and superimposes noise on the signal. To avoid this problem, twists the wires in the circuit. This will cancel the noise and get you back in business.

CROSS TALK

Too much talking can make it quite hard to listen. Cross talk occurs when multiple circuits are carried in the same conduit, leading to more noise in the circuit. Cables with individually-shielded, isolated pair shields can block noise from adjacent pairs, making it easier to get accurate readings.

COMMON MODE

Common mode noise can be cause by multiple grounds in an instrument circuit that cause a current to flow between the two of them. It can also happen in thermocouple extension cable circuits where the couple is connected electrically and physically to it as well. Grounding circuits at only the thermocouple can help remove noise, while receivers with a high common mode rejection ratio can help control interference.

QUALITY READINGS WITH QUALITY THERMOCOUPLES

Noise can be a major issue, but it’s even harder to get good readings with bad thermocouples. GeoCorp is a thermocouple manufacturer that works hard to take care of our customers, even going as far as maintaining a calibration laboratory to assure quality. Contact us today if you need good thermocouples that will help you ensure that measurements aren’t a problem.

HOW GEOCORP HELPS WITH TRACEABILITY

A little information can go a long way. Traceability allows people to know key information about a part, including history, application, and location. This information lets people know more about the parts they’re using in their facilities so that they can verify its quality and know where to turn in case there are any future issues.

Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to trace back some products. Whether a part went through multiple vendors or there’s a lack of corresponding information, your business could struggle to find the information you need. GeoCorp offers traceable thermocouple products for customers in need of quality thermocouple supplies.
CAUSES OF THERMOCOUPLE FAILURE, PART 2

Thermocouple failure is a big deal. Not only will you need to replace bad thermocouples, a malfunctioning part can lead to improper measurements and other issues.

In our last blog post, we detailed how metal fatigue and oxidation can cause issues for your thermocouples. This week, we detail how contamination and poor installation are potential dangers for your business.

CONTAMINATION

Foreign substances present a risk to thermocouples. Contaminants can damage thermocouples, causing reactions at high temperatures and that can damage a part. Various impurities can accelerate the impact of other issues, such as metal fatigue and oxidation, leading to an early demise for your thermocouples.

POOR INSTALLATION

While factors like contamination are a threat to thermocouples, the human element is still a big factor. Thermocouples require precise placement to ensure that they are aren’t placed under too much stress. This undue pressure can damage the thermocouple and lead to failure.

A poor install can also bring thermocouples in contact with harmful chemicals that can lead to contamination or metal fatigue. Careful handling can help you avoid these issues, as a poor install can make your thermocouples weaker and less effective. Improper storage is another threat, as unclean conditions can impact thermocouples that are being saved for a later installation.

ORDER PREMIER THERMOCOUPLES FROM GEOCORP

At GeoCorp, we strive to provide top-quality thermocouples for our customers. We work hard to offer a diverse selection of parts that will last for you and your applications.

CAUSES OF THERMOCOUPLE FAILURE, PART 1

A malfunctioning thermocouple can lead to incorrect measurements and create big problems. Thermocouples are built to be resilient, but there are a few factors that can cause thermocouple failure. This week, we’ll go into how metal fatigue and oxidation are both potential threats to your thermocouples.

METAL FATIGUE

Like everything, thermocouples can’t stay new forever. A good thermocouple is going to be used, and that can lead to metal fatigue. Changes in temperature can cause regular expansion and contraction in metal, which will cause thermocouples to weaken over time. After enough time, metal fatigue can cause a thermocouple to break.

Thermocouples that are regularly exposed to extreme heat stress or extreme conditions are more likely to go through metal fatigue. If thermocouples start to give out unusual readings, it may be suffering from metal fatigue.

OXIDATION

Oxygen is great for people, but it doesn’t always extend the life of a thermocouple. The presence of oxygen causes a reaction in the thermocouple that can wear down the part and make the wires become thinner and more brittle.

Oxidation can be caused by a small amount of oxygen making its way into a sealed environment and reacting with the pure metal of the thermocouple. Make sure to check your sealed thermocouples regularly to ensure that the integrity of their seals haven’t been compromised and can continue to operate without fear of oxidation.

HIGH-QUALITY THERMOCOUPLES FROM GEOCORP

Thermocouple failure can lead to incorrect readings and unplanned downtime. GeoCorp can provide you with high-quality thermocouples that are designed to meet your needs and are built to resist factors like metal fatigue and are sealed properly to prevent oxidation.

Give us a call at 419-433-1101 or contact us online today to talk to one of our experienced sales technicians about how our thermocouples can benefit your business.

THE COST OF A BAD THERMOCOUPLE

Bad thermocouples can really cost your business. Thermocouples need to correctly measure temperature, and sensors that don’t work properly – or even at all – is a problem.

The cost of a bad thermocouple is greater than just the price tag on a replacement part, however. Replacing a thermocouple takes time, and any loss of time hurts your work flow.

REPLACING A THERMOCOUPLE

If a thermocouple doesn’t work, you’ll notice a problem pretty quickly. Then you’ll have to try and get a replacement part as quickly as possible.

Having to spend money on replacement parts is frustrating enough, but potential downtime can be a major issue for your bottom line.

DEALING WITH INCORRECT READINGS

Thermocouples that don’t work are a problem, but thermocouples that provide misleading information can be even worse. Incorrect readings may not be caught right away, which means that you could work through bad sensors and cause even more downtime to fix the issue. If you notice any strange readings from your thermocouples, it may be time to replace them.

LIMITING DOWNTIME WITH FAST DELIVERY FROM GEOCORP

Whether a thermocouple isn’t working correctly or not working at all, there’s going to be downtime while you try and replace them. Even if you have warehouse space to store spare thermocouples, any downtime can cost you and your business. It’s even worse if you don’t have any of the thermocouples you need on hand.

That’s where GeoCorp can help. Not only do we provide high-quality thermocouples catered for your needs, we take pride in fast we can deliver solutions to our customers. Don’t settle for bad thermocouples; give us a call at 419-433-1101 or contact us online today to talk to one of our experienced sales technicians or try out our thermocouple builder to design what you need online.

HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOM THERMOCOUPLE ONLINE

It’s good to know exactly what you need, but it’s not always easy to get it. Sometimes you have to make due with certain products because none of the available options match your specifications. But when it’s your thermocouple manufacturer who can’t give you what you need, that’s a problem.

That’s why GeoCorp can help you build exactly what you need. No, you don’t have to come in to our facilities and assemble the products yourself – that’s our job. What you can do is create your own custom design in six simple steps with our online thermocouple builder.

Set Your Own Specifications

First off, it’ll help to have an idea of what custom elements your thermocouple will need. When you do, you can start building what you want in our online thermocouple builder.

To create your custom thermocouple, we’ll ask you about the following specifications:

Calibration type

Sheath metal

Hot junction

Termination

Mounting Fittings

Additional customized options

Even if you don’t have an exact idea for all six areas, you can check out the different options and see what works best for you.

What Happens Next?

After you finish your design and submit your thermocouple configuration, you will receive an email with the specifications. That way you can share and confirm the details with the appropriate people on your team. Then you can decide if you would like to move forward with your custom thermocouples.

Like the sound of building your own thermocouples instead of hoping to find a distributor that has exactly what you need? Use our thermocouple builder or contact us today and we’ll be happy to help.
